Last night we got in bed with the windows flung wide open, listening to the sound of the soft rain. It was cool and breezy but not too cold under our heavy down comforter. This is what fall is supposed to feel like, I thought, as I drifted off to sleep.
It's supposed to rain allll day today and in to tomorrow. It certainly makes getting up for work more difficult, but for right now I don't quite mind (ask me again tomorrow how I feel about it...). Welcome to fall, everyone.
In case you don't already love me for my daily witty musings (ha ha), here's a tip that'll put me squarely in your favorites category. You can finally do away with that confusing pile of plugs under your desk, or always losing the one charger that you need for your [insert one of a million handheld technology devices here]. Here's a tip for easy cord organization using...(wait for it)...binder clips. Design Mom showed this photo a while back and I couldn't believe how great slash easy the idea is. I already have a bunch of binder clips around the house (if not, I'm sure your office does ) and this looks like it would take about 2.4 seconds to set up.

Isn't this photo lovely? It makes me think of road-tripping in the summer with the windows down and heading someplace fun. I can't wait to get away for our beach trip in August. Until then, though, I'm just enjoying the good weather (it's been unusually non-boiling-and-curl-your-hair-humid for June in MD - how about where you are?) and trying to soak up as much of the weekends as I can (when I'm not working).

I am jetting off to a baseball game - the O's vs. the Red Sox at Camden Yards (go Sox!) - so I'm closing up shop a bit early today. Peeps. Since I didn't get in until 3am last night (no, I wasn't partying it up; I was doing this) and didn't get to bed until even later, I am currently trying to catch up on some much-needed sleep before I have to run off to work. I will hopefully be able to post something later this evening, but for now, I am either napping or working. So tired. (It was worth it though.)
I will leave you with this in the meantime: Last night, driving home at 3am on my scooter, I was actually able to notice all the smells throughout town. During the day I never get this sensation, and I certainly don't get to breathe it in that way when driving in the car (even if the windows are down).
Luckily, this ain't no NYC, so the smells weren't too bad - it was really more the smell of the bay breeze, a neighbor's plants and flowers, or trees in different parts of town. It was so nice to absorb the slightly chilly air as I zipped home, alone on the road and with no headlights in sight.
However, I did smell one particularly heinous tree - I believe some call it, ahem, a "semen tree"? My friend Jess thinks it's a ginkgo tree. Whatever it is, it's nasty. Luckily, not much farther downtown, the smell of azaleas, magnolias and even roses wafted up as I zoomed by. I love the oncoming spring/summer.

I didn't get to say this last week when the day passed, but sea*life*style just had its 1st birthday. Happy little birthday to you, bloggy! I can't believe it's been a year. Whew!
It was kind of a rough time for that milestone to occur (being that my two jobs have made me a sporadic poster at best) so I didn't mention the b-day at the time, but I wanted to at least acknowledge it now and give a quick thank you to those of you who have been reading thus far. I hope you're still enjoying, and do please feel free to comment with suggestions (or gripes) at any time - I love hearing from you all!
And with that being said, I'm tucking into a nice big slice of delicious cake while I write some new posts for you all to read. Hope to see you back here soon!

With temps supposedly as high as 80 degrees today, I'm thinking it might be time to bring out ye ole blue scooter from winter retirement and take it to work instead of driving the car (sunroof open or not). I only wish my hair looked this good after the quick commute: ...because I can assure you it does not. I either have crazy rats' nest tangles or severe helmet head. Yes, I have a secure white helmet that makes me look like a bobblehead doll - safety first!
This girl looks chic, too, as only the Milanese can: I tried that scarf-on-head business and all I got was a loss of 30 bucks after the silk scarf flew off my head. What you say? Bobby pins? Oops.
Either way, I can't wait to start up the Vespa and go for a ride. Do you have any fun warm-weather plans in mind?
It's ironic that I'm going back to my old workplace on April Fool's Day, no? I kind of feel like a fool, so that's appropriate. But I'm also glad for a bit of a change (though I only sort of brought on this change myself). Let's hope all goes well today and that this isn't just one big joke on me. (I wouldn't want to have to go all Carrie on their asses...)

We're not even two weeks into March and I'm proud to say that DC has two major accomplishments under its belt this month: same-sex marriages are now allowed and women pilots from WWII are finally getting the thanks they deserve. More specifically, the WASPs - or Women Airforce Service Pilots, who flew military planes during WWII - will be honored with the Congressional Gold Medal.
During their service in the war, the WASPs were considered civilians, with no military status or benefits. Of the more than 1,000 women who volunteered for the training and duty, 38 WASPs died in service, though none were given military funerals, meaning their families were responsible for the expenses even to get the bodies back. These women were finally granted military status in 1977 under President Carter, but - almost three decades after their service - came close to being a by-gone of history.
Miss Fifinella, the WASPs official mascot (designed by Walt Disney!), appeared on their shoulder patches:

Totally late to the game here. Why didn't I find this fun political drinking game until after the State of the Union Address? This is too funny not to skim through these rules (oh, but please don't get worked into a lather either way - have a sense of humor about this - it's meant to be for fun, not politically charged...).

I've been blogging and working on my laptop from my couch lately and it's the worst habit ever. I swear, I feel as though I've developed severe neck cramps and carpal tunnel (not to mention couch-potato butt) out of nowhere.
I need to get back in the habit of working from my desk, which is positioned next to a window and could be quite lovely, were it not for the giant printer taking up the whole thing. Something about all the dove gray and white, with the tiny pop of pink from the flowers, makes it so soft and inviting. And the bamboo chair and zebra curtains make me swoon. Those two elements are by far my favorite part of this photo. I'd switch out the lamp base for something less hotel-ish, but otherwise this scene is so perfect! I think I could really get some work done there...or just be happy looking around at my pretty little desk area.
I haven't actually seen the Winter 2009 issue of Better Homes and Gardens in real life, but I came across some photos from the mag on Paper Source's blog and lurved this uber-organized work area: The overall color combination is a little more bright and "funky" than I'd use in my own house - I love the orange, green and blue, but I'd probably use just one or two accent colors (instead of all three) with white or tan or something slightly more mellow - but I die for all the organizational materials used.
This is a Type A's dream here, people. If I ever work at home, I'm going to need a space like this stat. (And don't you love all the wrapping paper organization? This stuff is like crack to me. Laugh if you will.)
Are you cleaning up and organizing your space with the arrival of the new year? I know I've been doing some streamlining and organizing (starting with under our bathroom sink - how exciting) and it feels good to glean in 2010!
