Urban Decay Naked Eye Shadow - Swatches for women of color
Author: lilisokeyFor the past few weeks, I don't know what happened but I've embarked on this new found LOVE for cosmetics. I mean I've always loved the pages of the latest mag. filled with pretty things to ooh and ahh over, but recently I've actually been moved to BUY these things. A recent purchase was that of the Urban Decay persuasion: the original Naked eyeshadow palette. It came in the mail today and I'm excited to research which colors work best on my skin.
While doing much research on whether or not I should buy this product, I looked for photos online of fellow users and didn't find one review or visual swatch picture of a person with color pigment in their skin which makes it harder for me to know how the colors show up on anything else besides white skin. No diss, I just like to get accurate results and I wasn't able to find any. So, in hopes to help someone else considering whether or not they should buy, hopefully this post will help you some.

Black Models of 1973 Fashion Show Honored
Author: lilisokeyThe Versailles models of 1973 were honored this week at the Huffington Post Game Changers Awards last night. Why is this important and who are the Versailles models, you ask?
The 11 African-Americans models were part of the legendary Grand Divertissement à Versailles fashion show held in 1973 at the Palace of Versailles to raise money for its restoration. It featured 5 American designers (Halston, Oscar de la Renta, Bill Blass, Anne Klein, and African-American designer Stephen Burrows) and 5 French designers including Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior’s head designer Marc Bohan, Hubert de Givenchy, Emanuel Ungaro and Pierre Cardin.
Back then, it was rare to see Black women modeling on the catwalk but the American designers decided to take advantage of the international spotlight and make a statement about diversity. They hired 11 Black models to walk their shows, while the French used not a single one.

That Sweater at the MLK Jr. Dedication
Author: lilisokeyCan we just take a moment to marvel over the simple but FABULOUS cardigan Mrs. Obama wore to the MLK Jr. Dedication in Washington D.C. this past weekend. President Obama and family took a tour on the mall before making his unforgettable speech addressing current affairs and how many things have and haven't no changed from 50 years ago when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. worked tirelessly with others to create a long-lasting change for the under-served people in this country.
I understand the sentiment of this day, and I am very proud of the positive images that spread across the world of African Americans and our contributions and importance in the making, maintaining and the future of this country, but what I really understand is this magnificent cardigan! Thank You Thank You Thank You!
And to Dr. King, THANK YOU for all that you gave, sacrificed, fought for, endured, and changed. Your legacy is permanent in the lives of many and generations to come!
THANK YOU!

Now back to our regularly scheduled program...My Princess, Queen and Lady: Michelle Obama
Author: lilisokeyAgain, Congrats to Prince William and his bride Catherine. I wish them ALL the best and as much happiness with each other as their hearts can bear! BUT NOW... reality is back in order and I refuse to let anyone else overshadow Michelle Obama and all her glory. Mass media does such a good job of highlighting so many cultures and events that I myself am not really interested in. That's not to say someone else isn't, obviously there's millions of people interested in royal weddings, however, I live in America and am aware of the current affairs of this nation. No one walking on American soil has time to be so invested in the Monarchial wedding of William and Kate minus 8. well unless of course you're the media... then.... well... you know...
I felt the need to do this post not to downplay the newlyweds, but I take my responsibility as it comes and that's to keep things that are relevant in the forefront, and to me, actually to many, Michelle Obama needs to always and forever be highlighted not just for her style sense, but for who she is, what she represents and who and what she stands for. Quality and Beautiful Fashion is Mrs. Obama and I will do a post on her everyday if I have to in order to keep her relevancy alive. If people can influence a President to prove his place of birth on a birth certificate to the entire world, then what I'm doing is long overdue and really isn't even a tip of the iceberg.
With that said... check out Beyonce's new video - Move Your Body - a remake to Get Me Bodied to help fight against child obesity... apart of the MICHELLE OBAMA LET'S MOVE INITIATIVE ;)

Valerie K for Kate Middleton - PENG!
Author: lilisokeyI asked friend and Los Angeles based designer Kalia Kirby of Valerie K if given the task, what choices would Ms. Middleton have from her bespoke creations to wear on her widely covered wedding day.
The results are a beaut and quite peng if I do say so myself. Her inspiration was the national flower of England - the red rose. Good luck to the new couple, may Ms. Middleton continue to bring more style and simplistic fashion to the world for our viewing pleasure.
Maybe Solange, but Cassie and Selita Ebanks for Carol's Daughter... NOT SO MUCH! by Mia Anita
Author: lilisokeyC'mon Lisa, now I know you know better than this. Yes, all three women are beautiful and I applaud their accomplishments, but it's only been a few days since the spokes-three were announced and a few hours since this video dropped and black women around the country are NOT FEELING IT!
The issue with mainstream "beauty" is the lack of representation for women of color, specifically, black women. Now Carol's Daughter received a lot of respect and patronizing because finally we felt there was a line for us by us (F.U.B.U. 2000) and we felt a part and appropriately represented. Now looking at this trio, yes they all three are women of color, yes they all have great beauty teams working on them to attract the visual affect, BUT, these 3 women DO NOT represent the many grades of hair that range within the black community that are yearning for a brand that values and represents us!
A chic fresh out of a weave is not trying to hear Cassie talk about her stress troubles of wanting curly hair and being bored by her straight hair... HATED IT! That's like asking Bill Gates to speak about his desire for a yacht instead of his jet-skis and sailboat. I don't have either one, so WHY do I care?! I DON'T!
I'm interested to see the further backlash Ms. Price and her brand will get from this "bold" move. I mean where's Kelly Rowland? Where's chic from Girlfriends? Hell, where's Macy Gray? Variety is what black America is and I'm sorry but these campaign picks say nothing in relation to variety. Sadly enough, what it reads to me is a big mis-representation of the true diversity within the black community continually fed to the entire world that continues to divide our diaspora even further not just by location but through deep-seeded intra-racial ideologies.
Mia Anita's response to this whole campaign:

Walk This Way: The Nude Pump by Mia Anita
Author: lilisokeyFor as long as I can remember, I've always had an infatuation with "the truly nude pump," it's just something about the subtleness that does it for me. Whether its a bright cobalt dress or a pretty colorful motif, you can never go wrong with the nude pump, and actually for most women, the truly nude pump should be your best friend.
Now you may say, why'd you say for MOST women and not all. Well because not all women have the same complexion as the nude pumps pictured above. Take Kelly Rowland below for example. Now I love Ms. Rowland's newly found freshness, I think it suits her very well and I'm very happy to see her show some pizzazz and flash, HOWEVER... the shoes she's wearing in the photo, may be nude pumps to say a Charlize Theron, but those are NOT truly nude for Ms. Kelly.
When seeking a truly nude pump, on YOUR foot, it should be just that - NUDE! And when I say Nude, I mean BLEND! These pumps she has on have now transformed into baby pink pearlized rose pumps (yes all that)... and I know that was not the intention. Women of color have to be very cognizant of the difference between what society may name something and what WE KNOW it to be. And since we all come in various beautiful complexions, tones and underhues, there's a sense of honesty and responsibility we must have with ourselves, friends and family members when seeking items that may not necessarily include thoughts of "us" during the naming or designing process.
This is not to say there aren't nude shoes for every shade, because there are. Everything from pearl white to mahogany to rich grape, they're out there, we just have to look.

We women spend lots of time piecing together fierce fits to stop-and-wow victims on a regular basis so shouldn't you get the eye credit you deserve? Don't confuse the viewer with too many stops at first glance... pick one focal point for each outfit and keep it simple. Happy Dressing
