The Lake

Today was my first visit to the lake this year. By now you know about my weekly walks around the lake with my friend Jo. I've shared many pictures with you. For Jo and me the lake has become a synonym for a good time together where we share with each other what is really important to us, when we talk about our dreams and fears, about motherhood and our children (our daughters have been going to the same schools since 5th grade - that's how we met). It's also the time when we can vent, be it about our husbands, our kids' school or politics (not necessarily in that order) and simply know that the other exactly gets what we're trying to say.

The lake is also the place where we share our mutual love for nature. It was during a walk with Jo when we discovered the nest of the Great Horned Owls. She is a real expert in everything nature, and thanks to her I can name so many birds and native plants now. We crawl through some brush, hoping to see a bittern (we did). We can stand forever and watch the Great Blue Heron, egrets and Green and Black Crowned Night Herons. I can now recognize some birds by their sounds, like the kingfisher (not difficult) and, of course, the red shouldered hawk - a pair of them circles over our house almost every day.

But I also love to walk around the lake on my own. Very early in the morning is my preferred time, when I'm almost alone there except for a few other photographers and bird watchers. At that time - especially now in winter - the sun is not even over the hill and there are interesting big shadows on the lake. Thursday before Christmas I even saw six otters playing in the water. I had heard about them, but never seem them until that day. There's also a bobcat roaming around the lake, but so far I haven't seen it. Sometimes I see deer, and one morning I discovered a muskrat near the shore. In the summer there are snakes, mainly gopher and garter snakes, sometimes a California king snake, but they are very shy. And, of course, a lot of birds.

Walking around the lake alone always gives me a good opportunity to contemplate things that are important to me. Like my Etsy shop. This is the time when I think of new inventory and ponder about a new file system, so that it doesn't get too chaotic when tax time comes along. I think about blogposts I want to write either here or on Vision and Verb. And sometimes I simply dream - of places I want to travel to, goals I want to achieve. In my mind I'm designing my garden in a different way. I try to figure out how to save more water. And how to be more budget savvy.

It's a good place for me, the lake. A place to relax and refresh. And truly a place of my heart.

Do you have a place like this? Would you like to share?

The Beauty of Fog

My friend J. and I finally got together again to hike in our favorite State Park. She is my hiking buddy whom I told you about here. This year we didn't get together very often, so the more we treasured yesterday's hike.

We started out in the fog, climbed up the hill in the fog. There was absolutely no view, we saw the trail for only a couple hundred yards and it seemed to us that we were almost alone up here (later on we met a few people, though). At the end of the trail there is a beautiful lake where we usually have our picnic. When we arrived there after a 90 minute climb it looked like this:

Then the fog started to lift...

... and revealed the beauty of this place.

All these photos are SOOC.
This was what we saw.

And it was beautiful.

Another Morning Walk

Jo and I had another one of our early morning walks yesterday. There was no fog and the light of the morning sun was just beautiful and warm.

It takes less than an hour to walk around the lake, but we always stop and watch birds, I take pictures, we talk to the people - it's more like 90 minutes for us. We talk a lot during those walks as well - most times it's about our kids (she has a daughter in Kaefer's age), the school but also life in general, friends and sometimes politics - then we vent like mad.

But most we enjoy the nature around us.

The color of these leaves was stunning - and I guess most of them will be gone when we walk here the next time.

Of course we watched birds -

this snowy egret

a black crowned night heron, exactly at the same place where we discovered him (her?) last time

this cute kingfisher whom we heard first before we saw him (their call is very distinct)

and a downy woodpecker who chipped away happily.

I love Friday mornings with Jo, walking around the lake.
One of my favorite 90 minutes during the week.

BTW, most of these photos are SOOC - the light was so gorgeous that they didn't need any post-processing. I only cropped a few of them.

Ladies at Large

Last Thursday my friend Jo and I spent a wonderful day just on our own. We left the kids with Jo's husband and took off. First we went to a huge thrift store of the Salvation Army where we rummaged through piles of stuff for  almost three hours. We tried on shoes and hats, looked at furniture, walked through rows of bookshelves, contemplated the purchase of a purple ladder as decoration for the garden (we didn't buy it) and just this and that - dishes, vases, purses, knickknack -; it was delightful.

Of course we were hungry after that. Since it was a gorgeous day we drove to the Jimtown Store in the beautiful Alexander Valley - this old red truck parks right next to the store and you can get a glimpse of the beautiful area in this picture.

We had just parked the car when we saw this barn overgrown with trumpet vine and all the other beautiful details:

The Jimtown Store houses a deli - the sandwiches are delicious. We shared a grilled cheese with eggplant, provolone, prosciutto, basil, arugula and olives - oh yummy! The homemade lemonade was flavored with lavender, what a treat.

Of course we also looked around the store after we were done with our sandwiches. It offers all kinds of stuff - picnic dishes and baskets,

and wonderful cookbooks.

I had to laugh about these tins - my maiden name is Schilling.

And here are the two lovely ladies at large:

At the thrift store I had bought a vase and this decorative head (how do you call those in English?). I cut some branches of my buddleia, I think they fit perfectly into the vase. The head probably will eventually find its home in the garden.

What's in the Box ???

The mailman brought a big box to our house - and it wasn't for the Geek neither for Kaefer, but for ME !!!

About a week ago I had won a giveaway on Marianne's blog Life@RuffHaven, a big box filled with goodies. I knew what some of the goodies were, but Marianne was clever and told me that in addition there were many more things I would certainly love for making any kind of mixed media art.

How right she was!

I unpacked the box - and felt like a kid in a candy store.

There was sticky-back canvas, nature papers, stickers and fabric...

... canvas and ribbon...

...beautiful border punches (hello Martha!), more ribbon and brushes...

as well as dimensional stickers, die-cuts and beads.

But this is not all of it. There were two items wrapped in tissue paper:

One was pretty easy to guess - six Mars bars. I had seen one Mars bar on her desk in one of Marianne's photos for WOYWW and had commented how much I like them and that it's difficult to get them here (except at Powell's Sweet Shoppe, and we don't have one in our town). This was BEFORE I had won the box and I had never thought that she would remember that - isn't she a sweetie?

But what came out of the red tissue paper was the sweetest, most thoughtful little gift:

One of Kelly Rae Roberts' adorable girls.

Marianne and I both took Kelly's Flying Lessons, and Marianne actually was one of the first people to leave a comment on my fresh new blog and she welcomed me in the blogosphere. Since then we have kept in touch and sometimes exchanged e-mails in addition to visiting each other's blog. She is a wonderful warm woman who has a very special love for dogs, and it's a delight to visit her blogs. If you want to "meet" her just hop over and look around at her place.

Marianne - when I unpacked this box I was almost speechless (which doesn't happen very often, believe me). This is such a delight, and I can't wait to play with all of my new toys. The Girl will get a special place in my studio where I can see her every day and remember these wonderful connections I've made in blogland. You are a wonderful blogger buddy and your warmth and generosity has brought so much light in my life.

Thank you so much my friend!

Vision and Verb - Friendship

Today I'm over at Vision and Verb, writing about the friends who go and those who stay - the companions in our life. I invite you to come and read - and perhaps let me know what you think. Thank you.

Happy New Year

To all of you, my wonderful blogger buddies: Have a happy 2011! I hope that the new year will be a good year for you with many wonderful moments of joy and fulfillment. Stay healthy and live life to the fullest.

We just came back from 11 days in the desert - wonderful, exciting days when we visited places we love and explored new sites. Our hope to find snow was finally fulfilled on the almost last day of our trip in Utah. But even though the snow was rare over Christmas, we had a very relaxing time that we enjoyed as a family - and I never got near the laptop, not even once.

I hope I can tell you more about the trip in the days to come, I'd really like to share it with you. I'm still sorting through my photos, I took almost 2000 pictures and many of them are just crap, at least in my opinion. But you will get to see some of them.

One of the nicest things of coming home is going through the pile of mail (you know, the "real" stuff,  with envelopes and stamps...). Among them, I received two items I'd love to share with you.

The first one is an ornament handmade by my blogger friend Rhonda at Roban Studio. She had shown these ornaments on her blog sometime before Christmas and I thought how cute they were - but I had never thought that she would actually send one to me! What a lovely and thoughtful surprise. Thank you so much, Rhonda, the little nutcracker will have a home here for years to come.

The second one is ornament #3 of Louise Gale's Creative Color Challenge Ornament Swap, and this one is from Regina. I absolutely love this little scene, it looks very peaceful. Thank you very much, Regina, this is so beautiful.

Please come back tomorrow - I'm going to have my very first giveaway on the very first day of the new year.

Taking a Break

This year that is so quickly approaching its end has been a very exciting year for me. So much has changed, so many new opportunities opened up, so many new connections that fill my heart with warmth and joy. Many of you are fellow flyers and might have been gone through similar experiences - the fear, the courage, the incredible excitement, the doubts, the encouragement.

Starting my blog was one of the big changes this year and this involves you. I still can remember the excitement about the very first comment I got. By commenting you have so often given me encouragement, lifted me up when I was a bit down, and very often put a broad smile on my face and sometimes even let me laugh out loud (something I really love to do). Before, I had never thought that people I only know through the Internet could become close. Today, I know better.

I am so grateful for you.

To all of you - have a peaceful Christmas, and if you don't celebrate Christmas I hope that the spirit of the season touches your heart. May 2011 be a good, healthy and joyful year for you.

This year has also been quite exhausting. Therefore, I have decided to take a break from my blog (and most probably from the computer) until the end of the year. Most likely you will not hear from me, but rest assured that I will think of you.

I look forward to "meeting" all of you again in blogland in the new year.

A Visit by My Neighbor

Mary, my neighbor across the street, came by this evening with a bag of Christmas presents and a whole lot of books under her arms. We usually look after each other, and when she and her husband are out of town I take care of their two cats and they in turn look after our mail when we're gone. We usually chat when we see each other, share an occasional dinner and they came with us to look at the house which we were thinking of buying.

So she came over right after work. She wanted us to open our present here and now, warning us that it wasn't new but she thought we would like it. And OMG - we do like it!!!

She bought these elves years ago at Neiman-Marcus. She always enjoyed them, but now she wanted us to have them, hoping that we will enjoy them for years to come. I'm pretty sure that we will do exactly that. But how sweet is this? I was almost speechless (doesn't happen often, I can assure you) about her lovely generosity.
This is my favorite elf:

Then she gave us the books - old books that she had owned for years, but now feels that they need a new home and thought that our home would be perfect for them. These are the books:

Now what kind of a treasure is this? These books are from the 70's and early 80's and gorgeous inside. You learn about how Christmas is celebrated in different countries, their traditions, music and recipes. How could I not like it?

These are a few pages in the book about Christmas in Germany:

"Silent Night" and the history of how the song originated.
(if you click on the picture it will be enlarged and you can actually read the story)

Instructions for crafts projects

German Christmas art

And of course there are some recipes included.

This is an incredible gift. I will treasure this for years to come, I'm completely sure of it. It's not just the gift, it's the giving from the heart of my neighbor, her thinking of us and how much we would appreciate this wonderful sign of friendship. I am so touched and deeply grateful for the wonderful neighborhood I'm living in. We are some lucky people and really felt the spirit of the season tonight.
