The world is larger than what you know : Considering the Deaf/HOH on YouTube

I am definitely guilty of this and reading this makes me feel like crap. In a way I'm happy I keep most of my info. in written form but still, I know in some way I've violated and discriminated without even realizing it. Thanks to CurlyNikki for posting this... this will definitely help me design my future posts and videos.

Youtube has been an invaluable resource throughout my natural hair course. The ladies who take the time to make videos to share with us, all rock in their own special ways.

The only complaint that I have really, is that some don't seem to consider their D/deaf or Hard of Hearing audience. Vloggers, please do not forget your D/deaf audience. There is a massive amount of D/deaf & HOH people all throughout the country, and I am sure many of them are naturals...or wanna be, and can benefit from the information shared within those videos.

Imagine finding a natural hair video on Youtube, that you feel, just by looking at the title that your pressing question may finally be answered. So you click on the video, and once it starts, the Vlogger is speaking so fast you can't possibly rely on lip reading, and there is not a tap of captioning included, highlighting the main points. You're a little disheartened but not to worry, there is always the more info/description box, so you head there and its blank or gives you not a hint as to the break down of that video.

I swear every time I find a video like that it feels like some D/deaf natural is somewhere relaxing her hair in frustration.

Why is this important to me? Because I am a deaf natural & so are some of my friends. I can not tell you how many times I've been faced with the above mentioned scenario. Clear pronunciation, facing the camera when speaking, captions within the video or a detailed description box are treasures to me. Blogger/Vlogger Mae of Natural Chica is a wonderful exemplar of this!

{Check out Caption Tube, and this helpful article on Mashable for video captioning help}

Another option could be that if you have a blog in addition to your Youtube channel, you can briefly summarize your video in a blog post. Nothing major, simply include the title of the video, ingredients & step order if it's a tutorial. If it's a review, tell us whether or not you'd use the product again, and if you'd like, a one or two sentence reasoning. Heck if you don't have a stand alone blog...send the info to me and I'll post it on Curly Hue (giving you full credit of course). Just do something... just don't leave us out.

CurlBox - the answer to natural hair prayers

Created by a PR whiz in LA, curlBOX is a service that requires a monthly fee of probably like $24.99 (they say less than $25) and you receive 5-7 samples of natural (curly) hair products already established as well as new to the market. BRILLIANT! I know I've been hitting up Youtube a whole hell of a lot to try and figure out what works for my grade of hair but this will allow me to try undiscovered products that may just do the trick. My hope is to find something that equates to Sebastian's discontinued 2+1.

You Go Curl - Garcelle Beauvais

Why Miss Jessie's is better than Carol's Daughter

I don’t know any other way to say this but… having a killer product one, mixed with sample distribution, equates why Miss Jessie’s is better than Carol’s Daughter! In the year 2011, when markets are driven by sharing and trying things out before you drop bucks, samples are essential to driving customers to your killer products and keeping them there.

In a recent conversation with my best friend, she told me she had contacted the MAIN office for Carol’s Daughter IN New York, to inquire about getting samples to try the product to see if it was right for her. Well, straight from corporate, she was told “NO.” Now C.D. lost a potential customer and may have lost an on the fence customer in the process. In a previous post, I mentioned I received samples of Miss Jessie’s hair products at a festival and was super elated. It’s the psychology behind a consumer/business relationship. The consumer wants to feel like they’re getting the best and most for their buck in addition to not suffering from buyers remorse and not feeling used or tricked. What happens when I drop $20 on a bottle of “miracle hair boost” and the ‘ish doesn’t work for my grade of hair? I WON’T BE BACK TO TRY SOMETHING ELSE, that’s for sure.

Another reason comes straight down to the product. Last Wednesday morning, I washed my hair and planned to try out the Miss Jessie’s Super Sweetback Treatment, put a hat on and hit Starbucks, foregoing my usual heat cap experience. However, when I sectioned and combed that treatment in, I was so stunned and pleased by what it did to my hair WITHOUT the heat cap, I decided to postpone my frap. & free wifi trip another hour just so I could finish the process in a proper manner. That treatment is pure magic, for real! I don’t know what’s in it, but whatever it is it brought out every single curl and wave I didn’t even think I had yet. It’s the kind of treatment you can put on after washing and wear it by itself because it’s created the curly look you were striving for. It is not the elongating curl enchancer but it for sure is the curl creating  and hair smoothing enhancer. Now I’m not sure how the do will look after it dries, but if you live in a humid environment, this may be your winner.

Now don’t get my wrong, I’m not saying Carol’s Daughter is all bad even though their extra small curl booster bottle is $10, because actually that recipe is good as an everyday conditioning potion. It helped to lay my hair down while many other products failed to compete, so I will give kudos where do, however, when you are fresh out of a weave, in a transition, have extremely THICK, frizzy, curl-not-quite-right hair and you want it to act accordingly, I would definitely recommend trying Miss Jessie’s Super Sweetback [Badaaassssssssssss!] Treatment and share your experience below. It may help another woman seeking for the best product for her mane.

The best shampoo for Black Women - Miss Jessie's or Creme of Nature?

It’s a given that when growing out a perm and growing natural will come with much stress, impatience, frustration, and LOTS of money spent on “new” items seeking the one who does our transitioning hair justice! Prior to my transition, I had always used Crème of Nature as ONE of my shampoos (I use about 3-4).  This past weekend while attending the Long Beach Jazz Festival (click here to view photos), I came home with not only great memories and dirty feet, but also a bag of Miss Jessie’s hair product samples. While I had heard of Miss Jessie’s and saw the link in Target (my fave store) at a price point I was NOT willing to reach for a product I had never used and had only saw the regular magazine and online Ads for, I was really happy I would get to try the line to know exactly if it was worth it.

This post is dedicated to shampoo’s, but I will be posting within the next week my review on Miss Jessie’s and Carol’s Daughter and the difference between the two along with which one I will be buying from here on out.

Now, on to the point. I prefer Crème of Nature (former look) shampoo OVER Miss Jessie’s Slip Sudsy Shampoo and here’s why. It’s important to make note, Crème of Nature has TWO recipes out right now. One bottle has a very small icon of the former bottle design on the front left bottom corner titled “Former Look” THIS is the recipe I am referring to when I saw C.O.N., not the one without – that “new” recipe is way too drying for the hair.

Miss Jessie’s did exactly what it said, it slid and actually lathered a bit, however. the amount of moisture in it was not there. It was reminiscent to other more generic and commercialized brands I’ve used. Crème of Nature (former look) leaves your hair feeling like you washed it with milk. It washes so soft, it feels like you’ve conditioned your hair already. You may think you still have residue, but you don’t, that’s just the magic in the concoction.

I will say, after using Miss Jessie’s slip sudsy shampoo, I did see a bit of curl pattern brought out after towel drying that I typically don’t see, but it’s hard to say if it was from the shampoo or not, as I have been using a lot of curl enhancing products on my hair, in particular, Carol’s Daughter Curl Booster, Lite.

All in All, I would highly recommend Crème of Nature’s (former look) recipe for your hair if you’re looking for clean and moisturized hair. If you’re looking for as much curl enhancement you can find, try the Miss Jessie’s, hopefully you can find a sample somewhere.

You Go Curl (Tracee Ellis Ross)

She's thebomb.com; and always looks effortlessly beautiful. A natural inspiration indeed.

You Go Curl (Solange)

The "You Go Curl" series is an attempt to highlight all of the natural do's Black women are now sporting. It's been about 3months now that I've been growing my perm out and let me tell you something, this transition phase is NO fun.

Seems like yesterday Solange cut all her hair off and now it is so beautifully full and curly. I take pleasure in highlighting her bold actions and self-loving beauty by taking a stand with her hair. Black imagery showing self-love is something Black folks have struggled with for years, and it's great to see someone in the Hollywood limelight embrace their natural.
