Her style: Blair Waldorf (1)

I finally gave in and started watching Gossip Girl in October 2008 and became addicted right away. Seriously, I watched the 23 episodes that had aired by that time in less than 24 hours, stopping only to get a few hours’ sleep in between.
In the following months my wardrobe started to become mysteriously filled with headbands (including one with an actual bow on it) and brightly-coloured tights. My outfits became preppier than ever before and big dangling earrings that had always been my favourite accessories suddenly looked cheap and tacky.
There was only one reason for that: Blair Waldorf. Even though I loved the show, I could see that it wasn’t that different from all the other teen soaps, and most of the characters were stereotypes or at least people I didn’t really care about. She was one of the two exceptions. The other one, of course, was Chuck Bass. They reminded me of the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont (or, well, Kathryn Merteuil and Sebastian Valmont) who are among my favourite fictional characters ever. I admired and understood Blair and at one point realised that her style had become a huge influence on me. It took me some time to understand and admit that her style is not exactly the same as mine, nor would I want it to be. Sometimes I want to wear an old pair of jeans instead of a cute skirt or, yes, big earrings instead of a pearl necklace. But I still admire her style and she remains my one and only true fashion icon and inspiration.
This is why I decided she and her amazing wardrobe should be the first topic to discuss in this new and shiny blog of mine. Most of her outfits are to die for, but there have been some that frankly, I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing. Let’s have a look, shall we?
