Oh Happy Day

Friends, I've been gone for a while; I've missed you all. I hope you all had a lovely Thanksgiving holiday. Some happy news:

WE'RE ENGAGED!

Thanksgiving was a good one this year. :)

Polka dotty

I'll take one roll in each pattern of this very happy polka-dotted tape, please. ;)

I'm picturing it adorning/sealing up packages simply wrapped in kraft paper, using it to hold up pics on my inspiration bulletin board (the tape is removable), as a fun flourish on cards and other paper crafts, or even just to tape things together as needed (I'm looking at you, cover on the back of the universal remote where the batteries go!). Too cute.

Spotted on Armelle blog.

A Barney-ism.

Today I woke up feeling like this:

I've been staving off a cold for a week now and the cold snap that has arrived (along with all the buckets of rain) hasn't helped me want to crawl out from under the covers anytime soon.

But enough with the whining! It's fall after all - beautiful leaves, fun things to do, cooler weather! - so I dug up a "Barney-ism" to give me a proper kick in the a$# for this Monday.

Wait for it:

Thanks, Barn.

I'm off being awesome (ha). See ya in a bit.

Amazing news: the police recovered my scooter!

My poor scoot scoot is definitely worse for the wear - because it's been hot-wired, it turns on just fine, but doesn't actually turn off (I was standing there, key in hand in the police station parking lot, having turned the key and removed it from the ignition, and couldn't figure out why the bike was still running! thank goodness for the kill switch!), there is some damage to the body and paint job (which was custom and may not be reparable), the headlamp is broken and the license plate was ripped off brutishly, but it's in one piece and runs, so I'm not (really) complaining!

I am so thankful. I was semi-convinced I would never see it again (since poor B had his stolen and it never came back). To those of you that called, emailed, texted me or left a comment here, thank you so much for your kind words and well-wishes. I am so happy to have le scooter back!

I honestly want to do cartwheels:

I'm off bright and early tomorrow morning to take the scooter to a motorcycle/scooter place to see if they can fix it (and how much it's going to cost me), so one more bout of good juju would be great. ;) Here's hoping the blue scoot is back on the road soon enough!

Thank you all again! xoxo, r.

Bon matin & bon thoughts

Goooood morning, poppets! Happy Monday! Did you have a good weekend? I did, but I'm pretty exhausted - who knew working seven days a week for several weeks in a row could be so utterly draining? (Wait, I did - that's why I've never done it before. Blerrgg. ;) )

Anyway, I did get to enjoy the beautiful weather on Saturday and am hoping to see a glimpse of it again this morning before the rain is supposed to roll back in. In the meantime, though, why don't we take a second to skim through these awesome thoughts from some wise guys (literally, wise men)?

Top quote by Ghandi (a wise man indeed), found here. Bottom quote unknown, but found here.

I have a bunch more coming today, so check back in a bit. Hope you have a good Monday!

Little Bro & Boston

Photo from BCoM

My brother has been accepted to Berklee College of Music and they've awarded him a scholarship based on his talent! Hooray!

I am so excited for him, and so proud (and so looking forward to having a place to stay in Boston, but that's just a bit selfish, hee hee). Sam, this officially makes you a (M)asshole! (I keed, I keed.) ;)

Good thing it panned out - otherwise these hand tattoos would've just seemed ridiculous (wait...). ;)

Congrats, little bro! That's major news (ha - dorky music pun...).

Back on track

Hooray! Blogger is back on track! The pictures have reappeared!

Also, I was very rude earlier today and didn't even ask how your weekend was. Hope it was a fun one, and that you got outside before the rain came back. Cheers! (And see you tomorrow!)

Choose wisely

Good choice.

Rainbow in Your Hand flipbook

Rainbow in Your Hand, a 36-page flipbook by Japanese art director and copywriter Masashi Kawamura, doesn't create an animation on the pages like most flipbooks; instead, it creates the illusion of a 3D rainbow hovering over the pages.

Here are what the individual pages look like:

And here's what they do when flipped:

Amazing!

As seen on designworklife.

Lucky girl

I got a ghost chair for my birthday! I am in love - this thing is hot.

In case you doubt its awesomeness based on the photo above alone, here are some examples of its loveliness in action:

This photo featured on Full House blog (sorry, it didn't have an original photo credit) shows how awesome it is as a desk chair.

High-Heeled Foot in the Door showed a slightly more girly desk area (but still awesome nonetheless).

And Mlle Frou Frou's desk area is probably the ultimate mother lode of girlieness, but isn't it pretty?

Here - this House Beautiful room shown on The City Sage is much more simple, clean-lined and masculine(ish).

On a Brooklyn Limestone, the office is a little more adventurous with bright color and zebra print - that's why a clear chair is so clutch (to remain calm in an exciting room).

In case you thought the ghost chair was a one-trick pony (as a desk chair), it can do anything. Here it is as a dining chair:

From Jen Altman's house on Design*Sponge.

And for my final example, a lovely eat-in kitchen area:

This is also from Full House (with no original photo cred - sorry).

Now do you see why I'm so excited? Thanks, Mom and Auntie Ruth, for the incredible gift! Plus B got us tickets to the sold-out Vampire Weekend show for April (yay!) and there are supposedly more surprises to come on Saturday. I am a lucky girl.

Thanks! (And butterflies abound / thinking of spring)

Thank you all for the birthday wishes via text, email, e-card and phone calls yesterday (my cell was buzzing all day long!). I can't wait to see some of you at my surprise party this Saturday. Oops, scratch that; I'm not supposed to know about that. ;)

I had a lovely day yesterday, thanks to my ever-lovely boyfriend B. I hope he reads this, despite the pictures looking "girly" (in which case he usually skims those posts). (It's okay, I understand, boyfriend.) :)

The bouquet above said "happy day" and "thank you" to me for some reason, but I suppose it's also very much a spring thing. With all the snow we've had, spring seems eons away so I'm not allowing myself to even think of it, but here's another spring-y, butterfly-y item to add a little happy eye candy to your day:

Pretty, no?

Bouquet from Martha Stewart Weddings; cake as seen on Style Me Pretty.

And while we're on the subject (I can't believe I'm letting myself think about spring - it'll be ages until we see/feel it!), this photo is just so cheery!:

Photo from Selina Lake via decor8

It makes me want to go out and buy a bright new umbrella for April's showers. (I'm all taken care of on the beautiful blooms front for now - my aunt sent gorgeous flowers for my birthday - woohoo! Thanks, AR!)

How about you? Have you tired of all this snow and started to think of sunny days? Are you ready to stop rocking turtlenecks and boots, and to break out the tanks and flops? I so am.

Simple path to happiness

This flow chart might be oversimplifying things a bit, but it does seem like the underlying route to happiness. A good thing to remember next time things seem like they're getting tough.

Not to be the biggest nerd ever...

...but are you ready for Lost???

Recap tonight at 8pm EST, new show at 9pm EST. Can. Not. Wait.

(Woah, nerd alert.)

Snowy Monday morning and Unhappy Hipsters

Morning, y'all! (Wow, can't believe I just used "y'all" so breezily and without thought. I've been in the pseudo-South for too long...)

How was your weekend? I know it's another Monday morn - bleck - but at least this one is sunny and bright, thanks to the most recent dumping of snow in the Northeast (or semi-South, as we are here in MD). Can you believe we had another snow storm here? Mother Nature is really showing us what's up this winter. At least it'll be pretty for another day or two.

So, even though it's Monday, at least we have some things to be happy about. Besides our recent dusting of snow, it's also February now (can you believe it?), which means Valentine's Day, President's Day, my birthday and Annapolis Restaurant Week all in one month - what more could you want? :)

Let's continue to get this Monday morning started off on a fun note, shall we? If you haven't been to Unhappy Hipsters yet, go go go. It's hilarious. It's basically just a tumblr site of random photos, but the clever captions pertaining to our era's angsty hipsters puts it totally over the top into super funny territory.

Side note: Val, this so reminds me of your skinny-jeans-wearing, rocking-a-handkerchief-"for when I ride my bike" donning, messy-haired-by-night, high-paid-oil-exec-by-day boys in Phila! Doesn't it just scream them? And Sam/Jamie, living in Hampden, you should be able to relate. :)

Here's a recent posting:

"Maybe naming him Rimbaud wasn't such a good idea."
(Photo from Dwell, February 2009)

So, laugh at the unhappiness of hipsters here. Go now!

Danke! (and keep 'em coming!)

Photo found on Heart of Light.

A quick thanks to those of you who left comments yesterday after I said I missed hearing from you all (and I love that they were scattered about, and not just on that one post - it made reading them fun!). :) I know you're all really busy with life and working, but please do jot me a note once in a while if you have a moment - all kinds of thoughts accepted here, even the most random.

Hope you all have a fabulous Thursday morning; I'll be back in just a bit with more stuff for you to check out!

Happy little cottage and bloggy check-in

Good morning and happy hump day! How is your week going so far?

I noticed I haven't been getting as many comments as usual lately - and I looove hearing from you all - so I wanted to check in and see what you're thinking. Are you still liking this little blog? Anything you're missing? Anything you want to see in particular? I'd love to post some stuff that makes you all happy, so let me know your thoughts, even if you only have a moment. Pretty please?

In the meantime, on this so-far-sunny Wednesday, how cute is this cheery little house?

If it has a garden in the backyard, I'm sold!

Hope to hear from you today...sometimes it's lonely out here in the blogosphere... :)

More posts to come today. See you back here soon?

Weird fact #832: World helium shortage

This absolutely knocked me over the head when I read it on Party Perfect the other day - did you know that there is a worldwide helium shortage?? According to an article from USA Today, the world could be out of helium in as few as eight years. So that means my (as yet to exist) children might never see a balloon freely floating or be able to inhale helium from balloon and talk in a weird chipmunk voice?

And think of how the wedding industry would feel. No more of any of this creativity:

(Coolest wedding "atmosphere" ever by London landscape architecture firm Gustafson Porter, via Apartment Therapy)

Or this:

(Awesome engagement photo session from Laura Ivanova)

Or beauties like this:

("Eglingham Hall with Balloons" by Tim Walker)

Is this really going to happen? A world without floating balloons would be a little less happy, don't you think?
