The stationary/stationery issue

I'll admit it: I am a big ol' jerk, a grammar snot if you will (I may have mentioned this before). Sadly, if you spell something incorrectly, I'll probably judge. Sorry, but it's true. :| I'm not perfect by any means, but I do like a correctly written sentence.

One word/homophone pair that gets confused a lot (other than "a lot," which is not one word, as some people seem to think): stationery vs. stationary. That's why I love this tote bag:

The genius Sapling Press created this helpful tote in case you - or any repeat offenders you know - need a quick reference. It really clears things up, huh? And if you're a mean, mean grammanimal like I, then you're in luck, because these bags are available in the Sapling Press shop here.

Bagatelles & Co.

We're heading to a wedding this weekend (baaack to Phila), so I've been plotting my outfit. Given the current (and oh-so-fun) economic situation, I'll be wearing one of the dresses I already own - which is totally fine, since I own 8 gajillion (yes, that is a technical term) dresses from the 11 weddings we attended in the past two years (true story). Not one to do a full repeat, I'm looking for something to mix things up a bit. Accessories to the rescue.

I'm thinking of adding a belt and maybe a cardi for the ceremony, and of course, I'll layer on scads of baubles to make it fun and festive. I won't be buying a new purse, but if I had a few extra duckets (42 to be exact), I'd snap up one of these adorable purses from Bagatelles & Co. to compliment the ensemble.

At only 42 bucks and offered in a plethora of adorable patterns, wouldn't they make excellent gifts? (I'm thinking they'd be the perfect bridesmaids gifts.) Aren't they sweet and fun?

(And don't you love my excessive use of parentheticals in this post??)

Late, very late, grammar, and the Candelier

Hello, bloggie friends and TGIF! I'm verrry late today in posting, I know. Fridays are oh so very busy around here and this Friday is no exception. My bad. A peace offering to make it up to you?

How about this amazing Candelier? It's a chandelier made of 5,000 acrylic gummi bears; yummm. It takes about two months to complete just one Candelier, and they're only making 10 ever. I don't know if I could resist reaching up and plucking off a gummi when I felt hungry...after a while my Candelier might get a bit holey (but it's just so cute either way!). A child's (slash my) dream!

And speaking of very late, can you believe I missed National Grammar Day yesterday? Me! Grammar nerd extraordinaire! Boo.

The sign above is a bit of a grammar emergency, but it isn't a dire situation, so we shouldn't have to break (or brake) anything.

I'll be back in a bit with a final post before I head out for the weekend. See you in a bit?

Cheers (and apologies for the MIA day), r.

Yesss.

Did I mention that I flippin' love Vampire Weekend? Well I do. I'm super excited for this week's release of their sophomore album, Contra. I've only briefly heard the songs from it (thanks, iTunes, for the previews) but so far I'm obsessed with "Horchata" and decently into "Cousins" as well. ("Giving up the Gun" and "Diplomat's Son" are the next runners-up, but not nearly as good as H and C.)

The band still really reminds me of Paul Simon from the 90s, though Contra seems to be a bit more mellow and has less African influences than VW's first album. B-T-dubs, if you haven't heard the first album (self-titled) yet, run to iTunes now. I love "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa," "A-Punk," and even the over-played "The Kids Don't Have a Chance" - actually, I love all the songs from that CD. And how could I possibly not be into a band that has an entire song about grammar ("Oxford Comma")?

It's like channeling Muffy and Biff from the Preppy Handbook right into your iPod.

Both Vampire Weekend CDs are now available online at amazon.com (but skip the hard-copy CD and just go to iTunes for the digital versions).

Read this: "irony creepers"

Photo from unknown source. Anyone?

This post is brills.

(And please note that the use of "brills" was ironic because the post in question is all about "irony creepers" - or annoying phrases that you used to say jokingly but then creep in to your actual vocabulary at some point. Like "fo sho" and "totes magotes." Maybe even "fo shizzy" if you're a real douchebag. "Fro-yo" is a certainty, as are "outie 3000" and "later skater" (ugh, what am I, 12??).

It's so true though! And the genius Daddy Likey has translated this phenomenon to fashion irony creepers. Love.

Got any irony creeper phrases you'd like to share? I'm always in need of more inappropriately juvenile slang terms and/or obnoxious shortening of words to add to my everyday cacophony of verbiage.

Grammar Nerd Corrective Labels

I think at this point it's pretty obvious that I am a big ol' word nerd (see here and here for examples), but I'm glad to see that someone else is too. These "Grammar Nerd Corrective Labels" are the perfect way to stick it to grammar offenders. (Ooh, sorry for the bad pun.)

Stickers available for purchase on Dylan Meconis's site, as seen on Brown Sugar Design.

Do you think you'd have the cajones to leave one of these stickers for someone? I know of a few bars' bathroom walls that could use more than a few of these labels (and a censor. And some soap.)...

Apostrophe-a-go-go

Photo from Flickr - evidently this place is owned by a guy named Cocktail and his friend Eat.

Grammar nerds rejoice: I've just discovered a site with a lovely flow-chart explaining the proper usage of apostrophes. It makes me happy. I can't tell you how many improperly used apostrophes I've seen. For example, why don't people understand that "its" is a possessive pronoun and "it's" is a contraction of "it is"? - they're different things!

Check out the full site for further enlightenment on the usage of apostrophes.

I'm getting off my horse now...
