Feeling nautical

Folks. I AM BACK. :) I've missed you all! Fo reals. Did you all have nice Labor Day weekends? Ah, the last holiday weekend of the summer. When did it get to be September?? I feel like summer just started and now it will be over - officially - in 19 days! (Though Labor Day weekend really feels like the true end of summer.) Boo.

In the meantime, I'm grasping on to the last semblances of summer, which to me right now is feeling like a nautical tone - for the home, clothes and accoutrement. Here are some of the nautical items inspiring me right now:

Room by T. Keller Donovan (as seen in House Beautiful), via SHELTER

The above living room really started off this seafaring feeling for me. I don't like an overly "theme-y" room, but this one is done nicely and without getting too crab shanty. The striped rug, the tufted ottoman and the pseudo-leopard stripe pillows are killing me with goodness. (Also this room kind of looks like a much more chi-chi version of my own living room, so of course I'm in love.) ;)

Sheets from Land of Nod, as spotted on Design*Sponge

These sheets are totally nautical with a touch of French provencal - and would be perfect in any crisp guest room. Can't you just picture visiting the coast of Maine, sleeping in a white and blue room, with a lovely ceiling fan overhead and a seabreeze through the window? These would be the sheets I'd imagine gracing that bed. Ahhh....

Photos by Amanda Pratt, spotted on Full House

I would wear a stripey sweater every day if it wouldn't be just plain weird (and slightly dirty, no? or require tons of washing...). Oh yeah, and I'd happily float around all day on a lovely boat in Napoli, too, but that part may be a little less realistic than just rocking a sweater daily...

Illustrated print by Jon Contino, spotted on Soolip

I'm gaga for the look of the whale print above - the hand-written text is so beautiful (and done by a dude!).

Knot door stopper from Jayson Home & Garden

35 buckaroos for some seaside style in your house isn't half bad. I'd snap this up instantly if we had any doors that needed holding up (I don't think my bathroom door or the front door would work...).

From The Deep dinnerware from Anthropologie

I saw these dishes in person the other day and they are amazing. They're reasonably heavy-weight and the illustrations on them are gorg. They're a little pricey and maybe a bit much for everyday (the octopus tentacle handle on the teacup is both genius and creepy), but I still love 'em.

Sperry docksiders from J. Crew

I mean really. Who doesn't need a pair of gold docksiders in their closet? I know I sure do. (Also please note that I had an identical pair of these when I was in elementary school. They were fresh to death and I wore them allll the time. Such a trendsetter at 10. [haha])

Sammy the Seagull, by Wayne Pate, originally spotted on Design*Sponge

And finally, this fun guy was too cute not to include. We all need a little whimsy, especially when doing nautical, and this guy is pretty good. In fact, I would wear his outfit anytime.

So what do you think? Is this nautical route way too overdone these days? I'm not planning to run out and buy all of these accoutrement anytime soon (or any, likely), but I did love the breezy and clean feeling these pics gave me. Hope it helped you hang on to summer just a wee bit longer!

123, you & me (vintage aluminum numbers & letters)

Three, two, one - it's almost Memorial Day weekend - woohoo! And yet these numbers aren't just a countdown to the holiday weekend (aka the official start of summer - yesss!), they're actually really cool stand-up vintage aluminum numbers.

There are letters too:

These are obviously being shown with a wedding in mind, but I think they could be cool for lots of things. How about on your desk, or one letter for each guest at a dinner party, or even on the wall above a coat hook to delineate your kids' belongings?

For some reason the font choice is so appealing to me. I especially love the ampersand:

Sets of these vintage numbers or letters are available to buy on Etsy (just use the links to the left). Can you think of some other cool uses for these? Or are you too busy counting down to Memorial Day? ;)

Hello. on paper.

The cuteness! If I am ever fancy-pants-y enough to have personal calling cards, I want these ones that Erin Jang created, which were printed by the awesome Studio on Fire.

I'll take 250 with my info on them, please.

Font selector

This typeface guide by Julian Hansen is hilarious - and useful! If I were creating a logo or an invite, I would totally check to see if I were going down the right path by referring to this chart.

And if you're a really big design buff (or type nerd, perhaps?), then you can pre-order a print of this poster here to have on your wall all the time.

2010love

Isn't this type clever? I didn't see it at first, but it's "2010" and "love" no matter how you read it - either top row, then bottom row, or the black block on the left, then the red block on the right. So smart!

These 2010love tees only cost...you guessed it: $20.10. They're also part of the greater 2010love movement "created to inspire people to make a positive change in their own lives and the lives of others, starting now.”

A positive life change is always good, but for the lazyman, the tee is pretty cute in the meantime. ;) There's also an infant onesie:

Psst: For the month of April, 10% of proceeds from 2010love tees will be donated to The Earth Day Network, in honor of Earth Day on April 22. Awesome!

...Or rabbit, rose, Royal Air Force (that just happens to be my initials too, thank you very much), radical, rambunctious, raunchy, ridiculous, reserved and a slew of other things - some of which I am, some of which I am not. (I am fairly certain I am not a rabbit. I do like carrots a lot though.)

Anyway, the point is, I love Daily Drop Caps by Jessica Hische! I've posted about them before (see here for more letters and info), but she's on to another set of all new letters, so I thought I'd share.

R

oger that.

O

ver and out.

Bubbly pour vous?

I'm generally not a huge Marilyn Monroe fan (not that I dislike her, I've just never been that into her), but more and more after reading some of her quotes, I think she seems like she'd have been really fun.

Just check out this hilarious thank-you note from her to a Mr. von Fuehlsdorff:

Spotted on Oh Hello!

So funny. Also, is it really nerdy of me to say that I miss typewriters? Not that we even had one in my lifetime, but the letter above looks so much cooler (than today's Word doc!) all typed out like that. Perhaps I'll get myself a typewriter and do all my correspondences on it...

Happy ABCs

These letters from Jeanie of The Paper Nut are so happy and cheery. She's currently cooking up the rest of the alphabet and plans to release a poster of all of the letters once they're done - wouldn't the soft colors and pretty illustrations be perfect for a baby's nursery? Or even better, you could use the first letter of your child's name for a birthday invite, on their door, or appliqued on a onesie or tee.

I'm loving the B (for my honey, B) and the C with the mermaid in it (this one is perfect for you, Mrs. Campbell!). Here's the letter for my name:

I always get the silly carrot-eaters in mine.

Measuring type

I'm even more green than I thought. It turns out that my default font choice - Garamond - uses the least ink out of these six commonly used typefaces:

Matt Robinson drew out large-scale renditions of these typefaces with ballpoint pens (see top photo) and then compared the remaining ink (above) to determine the "ink efficiency" of each font. Garamond wins! (And it's pretty.) Who knew Times New Roman was so wasteful?

Song for a sunny day

Last Sunday morning (after a ridiculous night in Philly), I woke up surprisingly fine (I thought B and I would have the worst h-overs ever, but we luckily escaped that for the most part), the temps were in the 60s - don't forget, it's November people! - and my friend Val was playing this. It was such a happy song to listen to in the morning, with the windows open and the sun streaming in.

When we got back to MD, I looked it up on YouTube, and was equally excited to find that the video was pretty cool, too - it's got some nice typographical action for all you design nerds out there.

I thought I'd share this fun song and video with you all. I'm really liking it. So here ya go:

Rock on, Eric Hutchinson (consequently, I also like his song, Rock & Roll).
