A Visit to the Nursery

My friend Jo and I spent a lovely morning together yesterday. As usual, we started out with breakfast at our favorite little cafe in Graton - they serve excellent coffee there and the scrambles are delicious as well.

The latte is served in real bowls, no paper cups here. That's the way I like it.

After that we were ready to visit one of our favorite nurseries - I know, it's only February, but we both love to garden and just wanted to "look".

The nursery always displays their stuff so nicely - our dreams could take off!

One day I will have a little pump like that in my garden!

I was good - I only bought a beautiful columbine and a small trellis that you can put into a pot. But in my head there are many colorful dreams of a beautiful garden this year. Every year I can't wait to get the garden going. The calendula are beautiful and rich right now, and since we have unusually warm weather the peonies are already on their way out of the soil. I have been trimming trees and cutting back old and dead branches and twigs, preparing the way for new growth. I feel whole when I can work in the garden and feel the soil between my fingers.

Are you a gardener? What are you planning to grow this year?

Autumn Splendor

I'm late this week for Inspiration Avenue's challenge, "Autumn Splendor". At first, of course, I thought about all the wonderful colors that autumn presents to us, like this crape myrtle in front of our house.
Or this beautiful sedum "Autumn Joy" in my backyard:

I thought of turning leaves, all those earthy colors.
But then I also thought of another side of autumn, the one that sets our table. I didn't have to get any further than into my backyard to find a richly set table.

Pumpkins...

peppers...

pears...

tomatoes...

Japanese eggplant...

our "volunteer" corn...

... and apples.

We also have a plum tree that this year was more than full with fruit. My friend Jo picked all of them, brought a whole lot to the food bank and made jam out of the rest.

Yummy!!!

August Break #5 - Colorful Pots

I love color. Bright bold colors.
I love color in my garden.
When I saw these big pots which weigh almost nothing I couldn't resist. They are just right for my bigger potted plants, like the blueberries, olive tree and lemon tree. They look gorgeous on the concrete that I unfortuantely have in my garden and give a great splash of color to my backyard.

A Tour through My Garden

When we moved into our house ten years ago, the backyard was nothing to speak about. Sure, it had a nice redwood deck, but there was a lot of concrete and the flowerbeds were desert-like with a few fruit trees. You really couldn't call this a garden; it was a yard.

This is what it looked like the winter after we had moved in. Sorry for the bad picture.

However, it held a lot of potential.

Over the years I eventually turned the desert into a lovely colorful blooming paradise, going through a lot of trial and error - and I mean a LOT. I learned which plants worked in what location (and which didn't). The hardest part was amending the soil - we have mainly adobe and it needs a lot of compost to get the soil workable.

calendula and sweet pea

salvia
But all the hard work eventually paid off, and I love my wild garden. Yes, I call it a garden now, even though there's still the concrete. That, however, is a great foundation for half barrels that hold most of my veggies, and huge colorful pots. The garden is full of wildlife - so far I have counted about 25 bird species who stopped at the bird feeders. There are lizards, squirrels, skunks and raccoons. And of course, the cats from the neighborhood!

foxglove

One of my favorites, hollyhock

Another favorite, abutilon

I love all kinds of decor and little trinkets in my yard...

I brought these lobster buoys from Maine.

...and, of course, birdbaths.

Lazy Weekend

We had a wonderful lazy weekend - no appointments, nowhere we had to be, nothing. Just free time that we could spend to our heart's desire.

The Geek decided to do his homework for his college classes. Kaefer went ice-skating and just hang out in the hammock.

And I thought it was a perfect weekend to add some smelly stuff to the garden.

My family hates it, but I love the smell of chicken manure when I spread the paydirt out over my flowerbeds and where the veggies will go. For us gardeners, this stuff is black gold.

Doesn't it look lovely?

And everything looks so good and healthy when the dark soil gets layered into the garden - just beautiful.

It took both Saturday and Sunday to lay out a decent amount of the lovely stuff, there is still more to do. But it's a good beginning and I can't wait to continue. Next, I will prepare the barrels for the veggies. I first had to clean them out and get rid of all the old soil from last year.

And after all that hard work it was time for a good barbecue on Sunday evening.

Signs of Spring

Cherry blossoms

After all the rain we had, the last two days brought sunshine and the temperatures are rising. What a difference two days make! Out in my backyard spring has definitely arrived - I'm quite excited about the new growth I discovered!

The peonies have developed little buds - these are dark magenta.

The French Lilac already has flowers, and oh! how do I love its scent!

Clematis come out of the ground again and start to wind around the apple tree - in the fall they show tiny white blossoms that the bees love.

I can't wait for the wisteria to bloom. It's climbed into the dead cherry tree and is stronger than the tree now, threatening to topple it over, so I have to cut it back hard after the bloom and remove the tree.

Another clematis, huge deep pink flowers.

This is a climbing hydrangea right next to the bench in one of the shady corners.

The bees were buzzzzy in the pear tree.

Are there signs of spring where you live?
